Stone Town, Zanzibar
Where else can you stroll past Portuguese, British, Arab, African and Indian buildings on one street, and still be within easy reach of lunch?
Stone Town is the old quarter of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's small enough to walk across in half an hour, and confusing enough that you won't manage it! The carved doors, the bazaars and the seafront are the obvious draws. But the real reason to give it a full day is that the town is best enjoyed without a plan.
How long should you give it?
One or two nights, at the start or the end of your time on the island. It's a completely different experience from the coast, and it doesn't mix well with a beach day. The town is hot, dense and busy, and that's exactly the point of it.
Getting there
Zanzibar's airport is about fifteen minutes from Stone Town, and there are direct flights from the Serengeti's airstrips as well as from Arusha and Dar es Salaam.
