The area

Mobile camps pack up and move two or three times a year to stay with the migration. From about July to October they sit near the Mara River, and that's the difference between a twenty-minute drive to a crossing and a three-hour one.

The decision

Coming for a river crossing? Then this is the only accommodation decision that really matters. A camp near Kogatende puts you twenty minutes from the Mara River. A lodge in the central Serengeti puts you three hours away, which in practice means you won't see one. Crossings happen without warning, and they don't wait for you.

The trade-off: mobile camps are simpler. Think bucket showers, no pool and no wifi, and they book out a year ahead for July to October. Absolutely worth it for those months, and pointless outside them.
